In-house coach training – 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

The organisation and challenge

Simon Barber, Chief Executive of 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Foundation Trust is a keen advocate of coaching having previously completed PB Coaching’s (part of Novum) Postgraduate Certificate in Executive and Business Coaching.

Simon recognised that bringing a coaching approach into the organisation could have huge benefits on performance and engagement. With an introductory level programme having already been provided, 5 Boroughs turned again to us to provide a more substantial course for people in the Senior Leadership Team and other senior managers. The aim was to reinforce the skill set and the mindset around coaching, and to set the tone for the culture they wanted to develop across the organisation. They also wanted a focus on Team Coaching and culture change, and to develop a strong cadre of people who could offer 1:1 coaching as an internal resource for the organisation.

The work

We delivered an in-company Postgraduate Certificate in Executive and Business Coaching for 5 Boroughs. This is a high level coach training programme:

The programme was tailored to include a close focus on Team Coaching and culture change, and to align with the clearly defined organisational objectives.

The results

The programme has sustained and reinforced the interest in, and commitment to coaching within 5 Boroughs, and has substantially developed their understanding and capability around coaching. It has also enhanced the desire to make coaching really work as “the way we do things around here” – creating the shift required to spread a coaching culture.

In a survey of managers 91% are having daily or weekly Coaching Conversations, 5 Boroughs have also created a cadre of highly skilled and qualified coaches, keen to offer 1:1 coaching.

Another excellent result, driven by our method of working at the psychological level, is that the very process of the programme substantially shifted relations between people in the senior leadership team – moving them toward greater openness and honesty, support and challenge.

5 Boroughs continue to invest in coaching, adding significantly to their internal coaching capacity and capability.
