About Helen Houman

The defining aspect of my role as MD of Novum is to bring effective leadership to achieve business success. Much of my time is spent working with members of the team to set direction and to oversee the company’s various functions to ensure that we are meeting our objectives and mission.

I also spend time acting as a client project lead for some of our organisational clients, supporting them to think through their development needs, facilitating the provision of the appropriate support they require and being alongside them throughout the course of our work together.

I manage the key strategic relationships we hold including those with our university partners, Leeds Beckett University in the UK and the Michael Smurfit Business School at UCD in Dublin.

As well as my leadership role, I get involved with delivery on our Postgraduate Certificate in Business and Executive Coaching and our in-company EMCC accredited coach training courses. I get a real buzz from witnessing first-hand the positive changes people make as their awareness is raised to new ways of working, relating to others and being in the world. It’s a real joy.

What matters most to me

I fundamentally believe that as human beings, we are capable of great things and have the resources within to become an improved, happier, more fulfilled version of ourselves. I also believe strongly in having some fun along the way. Life is after all, what you make it.

How my work aligns or connects with this

In a business context, the work we do at Novum is all about helping individuals, teams and organisations become what I have described above, an enhanced version of themselves, which sits alongside my own beliefs and values perfectly.

 My ideal weekend

Would involve spending as much time as possible with my husband and our two gorgeous boys. It would also involve seeing other family and friends, over some tasty food and a drink or two.

We love spending time outdoors so if we could incorporate some fresh air and burn off some energy, all the better. I would then catch up on some reading and potter around our recently renovated home – which has certainly been a labour of love.

My favourite quote

I have two:

‘The unexamined life is not worth living’, Socrates.

‘Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right’, Henry Ford.

 A book recommendation

Love’s Executioner: And Other Tales of Psychotherapy, by Irvin D. Yalom.

My favourite place

Abroad it would have to be Thailand, particularly Khao Lak. My husband and I spent two blissful weeks there on our honeymoon. Paradise on earth! In the UK, it would be a tie for the Lake District and Norfolk.

The motto I live by is…

Be grateful for what you have, cherish your loved ones, have some fun and live life to the full. You only get one shot!
